Pi Kappa Alpha plans to hunt during deer season from Oct. 1 to the end of February so they can donate meat to Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry. Members are primarily going to hunt white tail deer, but if they hunt white hogs, they will also donate them to the organization. During the five-month hunt, Pi Kappa Alpha is organizing two or three large groups of Pike members who will spend all weekend hunting and donating their kills. AHFH is a statewide organization that collects animal meat from hunters and then gives them to food banks. "Our plan as a fraternity is to record the hours in the woods as community service hours and to donate as many deer as possible to the AHFH," junior Bill Ablondi said. Ablondi said the goal is to donate 50 deer this year in order to give back to the community. "Every year hunters throw out meat from years past in order to make room for the upcoming season's harvest," Ablondi said. "This is wasteful." Ablondi, who has been a hunter for 11 years and goes hunting every weekend from October through February, said he feels guilty if he wastes hunted meat. Pi Kappa Alpha is also asking other hunters, families and friends to give deer meat to Pi Kappa Alpha so that its members can donate it to AHFH. "It is something that doesn't cost the hunter any money and at the end of the day is a very rewarding feeling," Ablondi said. Ablondi said an average deer produces 40-45 pounds of useable meat, over 160 meals. "For me, it's a great feeling to be able to use my passion of hunting to help those in need around the state," Ablondi said. Ablondi and Pi Kappa Alpha President Colton Bond planned the event before the semester began. This is the first time the fraternity has participated in a community service with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry. AHFH President Ronnie Ritter said the organization has been guiding Pi Kappa Alpha through the process of how and where to donate their deer meat and showed members how the fraternity can use group hunts to benefit local feeding agencies in the Conway area. Ritter said it is the first time that a college organization has participated in a program to donate hunted meat to his organization and said he thinks it will help the public have a more positive image about fraternities. "I am excited about future opportunities with these organizations," Ritter said. "College fraternities are often thought of as young men and women simply partying and drinking." Ritter said he can see the idea growing statewide to include more fraternities. "The young men I have met seem to be really engaged about donating to the program and concerned about helping those less fortunate," Ritter said. AHFH received over 42,000 pounds of deer meat statewide in 2008. Those donations served 168,000 meals to more than 100 feeding agencies.
