The Bears football team continued its late season Southland Conference skid on Saturday with a 17-14 loss to the Sam Houston State Bearkats at Bowers Stadium in Huntsville, Texas. The loss is the third in a row for the Bears, who haven't won since the homecoming game against Nicholls State on Oct. 24. The Bears record for the season is now 5-5 and a lowly 2-4 in Southland Conference play. The Bears losses sure haven't come easy this season losing their five games by only an average of 3.6 points per game. The Bears got on the scoreboard first in the game when senior running back Leonard Ceaser ran the ball into the end zone from six-yards out. Junior kicker Eddie Carmona added the PAT to give the Bears a 7-0 lead over the Bearkats. The Bearkats added three of their own to the scoreboard when freshman kicker Miguel Antonio connected on a 38-yard field goal to make the score 7-3 in favor of the Bears with 7:48 remaining in the first half. The score would take both teams into halftime. At the 8:12 mark in the third quarter things began to turn in favor of the Bearkats when on a punt attempt Bearkats freshman receiver Vincent Dotson broke through and blocked senior punter Jonathan Byrd's punt, scooped up the ball and ran it in from the 36-yard line for a touchdown to give Sam Houston State the 10-7 lead. Bearkats Chris Poullard scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Bearkats a 17-7 lead with 13:52 remaining in the game. The Bears answered back with 9:12 remaining in the game on a 9-yard touchdown run by senior running back Brent Grimes that made the score 17-14. The Bears failed to score again in the game to give the Bearkats the 17-14 victory. Senior quarterback Robbie Park was a lowly 11 of 30 passing for 106 yards. Park didn't throw for any touchdown, but threw for two interceptions and was also sacked twice. Grimes carried the ball 18 times for 68 yards and a touchdown. Ceaser carried the ball 11 times for 44 yards and a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Preston Echols led the team with three receptions, but his three receptions only amassed six yards. Sophomore linebacker Lamar Moore led the Bears with eight tackles against the Bearkats. Senior linebacker Larry Hart sacked Bearkats senior quarterback Blake Joseph twice for a loss of 13 yards. "I really thought our defense played exceptionally well," coach Clint Conque said. "Probably one of the two best games they have played all year. The Western Kentucky game being one and this one here was pretty complete as well." Conque also said the penalties that the Bears had really hurt them in the end. "We had a couple that were at very inopportune times," he said. "We had a touchdown called back for holding and we had a first down conversion that would have given us a first-down at the Sam Houston 10-yard line on a third down play. That made it third and 19 and we were sacked after that so we had to punt." The Bears had fewer penalties this game Conque said, but the two penalties he mentioned were at critical points during the game that really hurt the Bears. "Anytime you take points off the board, that is not a good thing," he said. Conque also said the special teams did have trouble on Saturday but is working on fixing those problems. "We had a punt blocked and that was the second time this year we have had a punt blocked," he said. "Obviously I haven't indicated exactly the detail we need to be playing with there, but I can assure you that it has been addressed again and hopefully we will see a better effort there."
